
If you've wondered why your favorite Korean sunscreen suddenly became harder to find in the US, you're not alone.
In recent years, many of us discovered lightweight, elegant Korean sunscreens that felt nothing like the thick, chalky formulas many of us grew up with. Then seemingly overnight, many disappeared from U.S. retailers or were reformulated.
The reason isn't that the formulas became unsafe.
It's because sunscreen is regulated very differently in the United States than it is in most of the world.
Sunscreen Is a Drug in the United States
Unlike most of the world—where sunscreens are generally regulated as cosmetics—the United States regulates sunscreen active ingredients as over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
That means every UV filter must go through the FDA's drug review process before it can legally be marketed as an active sunscreen ingredient.
The system (allegedly) was designed with safety in mind. But it also means innovation moves much more slowly than it does elsewhere.
The U.S. sunscreen filter list has remained largely unchanged over the past two decades while other countries have continued approving newer technologies.
Beginning in the early 2000s, Europe and Asia approved numerous modern UV filters that offered excellent UVA protection, improved photostability, and allowed formulators to create lighter, more cosmetically elegant products.
Meanwhile, American manufacturers were limited to the filters permitted under the FDA monograph.
That regulatory gap is one reason Korean sunscreens developed a reputation for feeling dramatically different than many American formulas.
Some of the modern filters commonly found outside the U.S. include:
- Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S)
- Bisoctrizole (Tinosorb M)
- Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus)
- Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150)
- Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone (Iscotrizinol)
These filters are valued because they can provide strong, stable UVA and UVB protection while allowing manufacturers to formulate lightweight textures that are inclusive and feel like a second skin.
Looking Towards The Future
For years, it was accurate to say the FDA had not approved a new sunscreen filter since the late 1990s. But, that changed in 2026 with the approval of Bemotrizinol. While products containing this ingredient will take time to reach store shelves, the decision marks a significant shift and hopefully signals greater innovation ahead.
What what does this mean for all of the other filters that we've grown to know and love?
When a Korean sunscreen contains UV filters that aren't approved as OTC drug actives in the United States, that product cannot legally be marketed as sunscreen here.
Brands generally have only a few options:
- Reformulate using FDA-approved UV filters.
- Create a completely different U.S. version.
- Stop selling the product in the U.S.
- Remove sunscreen claims entirely.
That's why consumers often notice that the "same" product sold overseas has a different ingredient list than the version available in America. It's not because one formula is necessarily better or worse—it's because they're following different regulatory systems.
